Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools police hope to conclude an embezzlement investigation at Park Road Montessori School this week, Chief Randy Hagler said Monday.
The district’s police force was alerted after an audit uncovered the theft of $15,276, according to Hagler and a police report. A school employee is under investigation, Hagler said, and his detectives expect to decide this week whether to recommend that the district attorney’s office press charges.
Neither Hagler nor the CMS public information office would provide details, citing the active investigation. The report says the suspected embezzlement happened between Aug. 23, 2014, and June 1, 2016. Hagler said the money was taken from CMS, not from the school’s PTO, which keeps a separate account.
Park Road Montessori is a preK-6 school with about 500 students. It is one of the district’s most popular schools; this year almost 400 students are on the waiting list for admission in August.
