Maiysa Mesbah, 19, of Charlotte was chosen as a 2011 Democracy Summer intern for the statewide group Democracy North Carolina.

She was one of five N.C. college students selected to work as a paid organizer to encourage civic participation, register new voters and educate citizens about the political process.

Mesbah is a political science and criminal justice major at UNC Charlotte, where she is president of the Pre-Law Society and Golden Key International Honour Society.
