Vance High senior Warren Beidleman Jr. of Charlotte won a gold medal and first place in the recent Best Teen Chef competition, at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charlotte.
Warren won a $4,000 tuition scholarship from the school. Bray’Anna Reid of Midland, a senior at Central Cabarrus High, took a silver medal and second for a $1,000 scholarship. They were among seven chefs competing.
Finalists were asked to prepare and serve a two-course meal in two hours. The meal consisted of an appetizer of shrimp cocktail and an entrée of sautéed chicken breast with creative garnish, rice pilaf and broccoli sauté. Competitors were judged on technical skills including knife skills, safety, sanitation, organization, cooking techniques and clean-up, and five qualities of the finished dishes – temperature, taste, texture, portion size and presentation.
