Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students had seven national award winners at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, hosted by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The seventh- through 12th-graders were honored at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
CMS students won two gold medals and one silver in writing, three silver medals in art, and one Future New Award winner.
Other CMS winners were Halley Freger and Ryan Herrera of Providence High; Ana Montesdeoca of South Mecklenburg; and Stephan Snyder of North Mecklenburg. Halley and Stephan – the latter whose mixed-media piece, “Ayotte,” is shown – were the other two CMS silver medalists in art. Ryan won a silver medal in writing; Ana won a Future New Award for performance art.
The region received nearly 2,300 entries. The top 10 percent received gold key awards and were submitted for national adjudication.
