Margaret Cardaropoli of Davidson, Lindsay Carey of Cornelius, McKenzie Maddox of Cornelius and Nathaniel Vang of Charlotte were chosen to go to Washington, D.C., and then Paraguay from July 16 to Aug. 13 as part of the American Youth Leadership Program.
The group, consisting of 18 youths and three adult mentors from throughout the United States, will convene in Washington for a week before travelling to Paraguay for three weeks. They'll spend three weeks abroad engaging with local government and civic organizations, building relationships with host families and other youths, visiting schools and participating in skills-based workshops.
AYLP participants were selected in an open competition of teens ages 15-17 who have outstanding school records, display leadership qualities and have shown interests in improving their communities.
