Sixteen seniors from Vance’s leadership class have been meeting weekly with first-graders at Nathaniel Alexander Elementary to tutor and mentor them.

Student leaders help the children build reading comprehension and fluency, develop social skills and review basic math facts. They're working on a joint project to develop a short story with vocabulary words from the first-grade curriculum, in which the kids complete the illustrations while the seniors write the text to develop the story. The book will be displayed at Vance and used at Nathaniel.

Vance students volunteering are Jasheem Anduze, Rachel Bernard, Kevin Bui, Amber-Lynn Cruz, Imante Eichelberger, Cierra Harris, Ahmed King, Denaisha Qualls, Tenaisha Qualls, Douglas Reyes, Steven Reyes, Eulisa Rosado, Emerita Solano, Vannida Thouk, Joshua Velazquez and Brittany Worley.
