Vance High senior Bre’Anna Washington designed an electronic save-the-date card to help plan Mecklenburg County and MGR Youth Empowerment’s “Recycle the Runway: Eco Fashion Show through the Decades.”

The event gives high school students in public or private Mecklenburg County schools a chance to showcase their design skills at the Southern Spring Home and Garden Show. Students will create and exhibit outfits and stage decorations from recyclable items. Bre’Anna will also design a trophy from mostly recyclable materials, including wire and cans, that will be awarded to the Best of Show winner.

She’s been interested in fashion since the sixth grade. “It’s not just fashion; it’s art in general,” says Bre’Anna, 17, of Charlotte. “I’m eclectic.”

A student leader in her school’s environmental justice club since last year, Bre’Anna says of the environment: “It’s where we live, and it’s all we really have.”
