Classroom Central will hold a special collection drive in the heart of uptown Charlotte on Thursday so low-income students will have scissors, rulers and notebooks for the second semester.

The nonprofit group, which provides supplies to students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union, Kannapolis, Iredell-Statesville, and Lancaster, S.C., schools, has run out of all three items.

Organizers say they’re also critically low on glue sticks, loose-leaf paper and composition books. The group’s overall inventory is 54 percent lower than the same time last year, they say.

Volunteers will be at Trade and Tryon streets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday collecting supplies and money. Collections are also scheduled for Saturday’s Bobcats game and Sunday’s Checkers game at Time Warner Cable Arena.
