Claire Graham, an eighth-grader at Mooresville Middle School, was named the Mooresville Graded School District’s Artist of the Month for this portrait.

She also received a mention by her teacher for completing the project despite breaking her right arm during a cheerleading tumbling exercise. She finished the work by using her left hand, even though she does everything right-handed.

Claire, of Mooresville, said she was only halfway through the portrait when the accident occurred. She said she never considered abandoning the project. “I love drawing,” she said, adding that she’s always focused on her grades and finishing her work.
