Several guest musicians will join students Sunday for the 12th annual Northwest School of the Arts piano program.
The event will be from 3-4 p.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road. Joining student musicians will be professional pianist Anne Trenning, violinist Jane Brendle of the Charlotte Symphony, and vocalist Mae Allen.
Northwest’s piano program serves 120 students in grades 6-12. Past benefits helped the music program replace 17 digital pianos with new Yamaha pianos in 2011, and the department bought a baby grand piano in early 2013.
Now the program is trying to rebuild its fund for future upkeep.
“My hope is to be able to sustain our unique program for many years to come,” said piano teacher Kristin Stonnell.
Funds are also needed to purchase apps for the set of 10 student iPads received in September 2012, thanks to a grant awarded from CMS. Students use the iPads to refine music reading fundamentals and create original compositions.
