Fifth-graders at Community School of Davidson composed every note, scripted every word and lyric, and created every prop and backdrop to “Henry’s Freedom Box,” an opera based on the book by Ellen Levine. Amari Murrell of Cornelius appears in one of the period costumes.

The story details the adventures of Henry Brown, a slave who escapes to freedom by mailing himself in a small box to the free state of Pennsylvania. Each of the four classrooms read the book. The opera was to run March 18-27 at the high school.
