There was big Google news in Charlotte Tuesday, but it had nothing to do with the company’s Fiber network of broadband Internet.

For her drawing of a tunnel that can travel through space, Providence Spring Elementary student Hailey Kim was named the state’s winner in the annual Doodle for Google competition.

Now in its seventh year, the national contest challenges K-12 students to redesign the Google logo. This year’s theme was “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place...”

Kim, a third-grader, drew a tunnel that depicts rapid global travel.

“I want to see many things and family on the other side of the earth. By inventing space tunnel to travel quickly, many people can meet, talk, love, and touch face to face. Like google did using internet. I want to connect the world,” Kim wrote with her submission.

Through May 9, people can vote online for their favorite of the 50 state winners. On May 21, all finalists are invited to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., where five finalists from across all grade levels will be announced, as well as the national winner.

The winning student will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 grant to improve their school’s computer lab or technology program.

The national champ will also work with a team of Google pros to animate their doodle for the first time in the contest’s history. Their animated logo will appear on the Google home page on June 9.
