A Rowan County elementary school has been put on lockdown, authorities say.

China Grove Elementary School went on lockdown around mid-morning Thursday, according to police in China Grove.

Parents are permitted to enter the school, but only by going to the front door and pressing a buzzer. Television coverage from the scene at midday showed several parents entering the school, some of them leaving with their children.

At least two Charlotte TV stations are reporting that parents told reporters the lockdown is due to a disgruntled employee. It is not clear where that employee is.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday, there was a strong police presence at the school, in the southern part of the county.

There has been no immediate comment from officials with the Rowan-Salisbury Schools.
