North Carolina schools received a letter grade Thursday based on the percentage of students proficient in reading and math, and the percentage of students making substantial academic progress. Nearly half of Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools exceeded expectations, the state said. One in six, however, failed to meet grade expectations.
