A Charlotte restaurant owner and chef has experienced what most will only dream of: He won $1 million from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Khoa Hoang, who was getting gas for his girlfriend, randomly decided to buy three Ultimate Millions tickets. One was a bust. The second got him $40. When he finished scratching off the third, he was left in shock and much richer.
“I froze for a few seconds,” Hoang said. “I had to double check.”
His eyes didn’t deceive him. He won a million dollars.
The odds of winning are 1 in 886,677.
Instead of getting the $1 million over a 20-year span, he opted for a lump sum of $600,000.
And after state and federal taxes, Hoang is left with $415,509. He said the money will help him afford more time off from work. He also wants to put a down payment on a house and invest in his restaurant.
