Two years ago, the city of Charlotte bought four crime-ridden buildings in the Belmont neighborhood in response to resident’s complaints.
The city planned to raze the buildings, but has now reversed course. The new plan is to sell the land with the hope that someone will renovate and preserve the structures in the fast-gentrifying area.
The City Council approved the change Monday night. The city will solicit proposals from interested developers.
The buildings include a former convenience store; a former garage; an empty home that had been converted into a duplex, and an empty single-family home. The city paid $295,000 for the properties at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Harrill Street in June 2014.

The city hopes to sell the property by September. City staff believe the buildings could be used for restaurants, retail or offices.
