North Carolina’s GOP delegates kicked off their convention week with a lakefront party Sunday night, the first of several receptions in a week that will also see them nominate a candidate for president.
Also Sunday, organizers released themes and speakers for the four-day convention. Monday’s: “Make America Safe Again.” Speakers include Melania Trump, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, retired Gen. Michael Flynn and Willie Robertson, start of TV’s “Duck Dynasty.”
Subsequent nightly themes will be: Make America Work Again, Make America First Again and on Thursday, when Donald Trump officially accepts the nomination, Make America One Again.
Seventy-two N.C. delegates, along with alternates and their guests, had converged in town by Sunday, with some taking an all-night bus ride from North Carolina.
Most were expected to attend Sunday night’s welcome party at Cleveland’s North Coast Harbor, not far from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band Three Dog Night was scheduled to perform for a crowd expected to number more than 10,000.
Delegates start Monday with a breakfast headlined by U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa of California and U.S. Sen. David Perdue of Georgia.
