CowPots are biodegradable planting pots made from composted cow manure and are an invention of necessity. Brothers Matt and Ben Freund are second generation dairy farmers in the northwest hills of Connecticut. One of the challenges of dairy farming is managing the nutrient stream in an environmentally sound manner.
Freund Farms operates a manure digester. Cow manure is heated by the methane gas collected from the digester. The liquid from the digested manure is applied to crops as fertilizer. The leftover material is then used in the production of CowPots.
CowPots are designed to be planted in the ground and 100 percent biodegradable. The process also eliminates noxious odors and pathogens, so adding them to your garden only adds the nutrients, not the smell.
