An 11-year-old South Carolina girl who disappeared underwater Saturday died from her injuries Sunday afternoon.
Great Falls police said a mother was teaching her daughter how to swim when her daughter disappeared under water. Emily Joe Britt, of Great Falls, and her mother were swimming in an area called the sandbar at Rocky Creek.
Great Falls Police Chief Steven Rice said a couple camping in the area tried to help the mother find her daughter and flagged down officials around 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
Rescue crews were able to pull the girl out of the murky water, but said she was unconscious. Officers estimate the girl was in the water for up to 12 minutes.

Medic reportedly gave her CPR and took her to Springs Memorial Hospital before she was transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte. According to Rice, Emily never regained consciousness.
Officers said she was taken off of life support Sunday at 4 p.m.
The area where she drowned is reportedly four feet deep, but drops off into a deeper area. Rice said Emily couldn't swim very well. Her mother believes she got tangled up in something, but police say the sand may have given out under her feet.
This is the third drowning in the Great Falls area in the past two months. A young man died at Lake Wateree State Park a few weeks ago, Rice said. Before that, two men drowned in a pond just outside town limits when their boat capsized.
