Mecklenburg’s mental health system under fire

Archive of coverage: Problems at Mecklenburg Open Door, a now-defunct mental health contractor, have led to the indictment of the agency’s former chief executive, the resignation of the county’s mental health director and a flurry of new questions about county management.

Documents and interviews raise questions about who initiated the release of confidential personnel information about county commissioner Jim Pendergraph, a vocal critic of County Manager Harry Jones.

New memo states Mecklenburg manager Harry Jones used provision that gives him broad control over some budget dollars when he approved $60,000 post-resignation payment to former mental health director.

Mecklenburg commissioners said County Manager Harry Jones erred in not promptly informing them about a $60,000 settlement to the former county mental health director, and leaving the public with a misleading impression about that director's final pay.
