Too many opt for subsidies over a job
I own a school furniture manufacturing company. We’re busy and hiring. But for every three people we hire, two either don’t show up or they quit the first week.
Why? Because the food stamps, health care and subsidies people receive from government sources are more attractive than working. Many of the no-shows are proud to tell us so.
Our government needs to quit making it more attractive for people to stay home than to find a job. I abhor giving taxes to someone who chooses to do nothing. I will vote only for candidates who feel the same.
Never miss a local story.
In response to “McCrory: Immigrant children a concern” (Aug. 6) and related articles:
Gov. McCrory’s concern for immigrant kids disingenuous
After reading this article the only concern of Gov. Pat McCrory’s that I could see had nothing to do with treating the children according to our laws or trying to minimize the negatives of their experience after “this terrible, terrible journey.”
Gov. McCrory’s “concern” appears to be to just get rid of the problem ASAP.
There is no “concern” for the children involved.
Influx of immigrant children will hurt U.S. schools
Our schools are already overcrowded and teachers keep getting blamed for the poor education American students are getting.
Please tell me how it makes any sense to continue to bring thousands more illegal immigrants into this country.
It will just make it that much more difficult for American kids to get a good education.
In response to “Hamas rejects proposal to disarm” (Aug. 8) and related articles:
Blind support of Israel by Obama, taxpayers is wrong
The blood of Palestinians is on the hands of our president and most of our politicians who blindly support Israel without question.
War crimes are taking place in Gaza and it is being fueled by our government and U.S. taxpayers.
Gaza is bleeding and blood is on the hands of all of those who blindly support the war crimes of Israel.
If Hamas regime won’t surrender, it must be defeated
America needs to wake up and realize that our ally, Israel, is on the front line in a war for Western civilization.
It does not matter whether you are liberal, moderate of conservative, because these terrorists hate us all equally, and nothing short of our total destruction is acceptable to them.
If this brave nation Israel falls, then western Europe and America are next in line in this confrontation. Failure is not an option. We must win this war.

In response to “Cabbies say new rule favors ride sharers” (Aug. 6):
Embrace ride-sharing companies, don’t stifle them
Uber and Lyft are not the problem.
Cab companies in and around Charlotte have operated free from competitive market forces for so long that their businesses have become stagnant and their services less than desirable.
Don’t mistake the absence of digital dispatch proponents and overwhelming presence of cab drivers at committee meetings for a lack of support for digital dispatch in Charlotte.
Charge tolls at S.C. border, it will keep spending in N.C.
I agree we need a toll road on I-77. Put it at the border of North and South Carolina.
That way people who drive from Charlotte to South Carolina will not go there to buy cheap gas and liquor. They’ll buy high-priced gas and liquor in North Carolina.
In response to “City must do better job keeping storm drains clear” (Aug. 8 Forum):
Shake off your apathy; report that clogged storm drain
Call 311 to report clogged storm drains. If you get no results, call your City Council member.
Too often I see streetlights out and overgrown yards go unreported for months due to public apathy. If the city doesn’t know about it, they can’t fix it!
