In response to “American Airlines asks for fuel sales tax relief” (Aug. 13):
Time to end tax relief for corporations
I appreciate that taxes make up a large percentage of an airline ticket. However, I would have also appreciated a mention of the profit American and US Airways made last year.
I’m getting tired of these corporations holding municipalities and states hostage over taxes, then passing that revenue right to the top. How much longer are we going to give up the money that is sorely needed to actually operate our municipalities and states?
Our roads, bridges, teachers, arts, libraries and parks can’t survive much more corporate welfare.
In response to “Wild mustangs crowded, inbred” (Aug. 13):
Developers, tourists, regulators are nuisance, not the horses
I fail to see how the horses have become a “nuisance” since the migratory waterfowl, nesting sea turtles, and wild ponies have co-existed for hundreds of years.
Maybe the developers, government regulators and tourists are the real nuisances!
In response to “Backups frustrate businesses” (Aug. 12):
Years of bad decisions, neglect led to current traffic woes
NCDOT and elected officials have ignored problems on I-77 in the Lake Norman area for decades, despite daily traffic issues that have negatively impacted, not only Cornelius businesses, but those in Huntersville, Davidson and Mooresville.
Cornelius and Davidson multiplied traffic problems when they cut down vegetation along I-77 that blocked lake views. Now, cars slow down to get unobstructed views of the lake, boats, girls on the boats, etc., and accidents occur.
Lake Norman residents and I-77 travelers are simply paying the price for years of bad decisions and neglect.
In response to “Eugene Robinson’s partisan take on Iraq ignores the facts” (Aug. 13 Forum):
Truth is that Dick Cheney orchestrated Iraq war
Sorry, but Forum writer Peter J. Augusta seems to be the one trying to rewrite history.
While it is true that Democrats voted for the war it was because they, as well as Gen. Colin Powell, were lied to by George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.
Cheney, in fact, was so determined to have his war that he made sure his chief of staff, Scooter Libby, outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, who’s husband Joe Wilson publicly called Cheney out on his lies.
In response to “Famed war on poverty has become a war on the poor” (Aug. 13 Forum):
Offering a hand up is OK, endless handouts are not
We have a $17.6 trillion national debt; nothing is free. Ultimately someone must pay for the Medicaid expansion.
The two things missing from this letter are that the war on poverty has produced no discernible results after 50 years, and there is no mention of any personal responsibility for staying in school.
I don’t think anybody minds giving a hand up, it’s the endless handouts.

In response to “Blind support of Israel by Obama, taxpayers is wrong” (Aug. 10 Forum):
Actions of Hamas are war crimes; Hough ignores that
It is Hamas that is using innocent civilians as human shields, setting up rocket launch sites in schools, hospitals and apartment buildings.
Is Forum writer Jibril Hough oblivious to the fact that Hamas is sending rockets into civilian areas in Israel and not targeting military targets?
The last thing we need is this ill-informed individual trying to make Israel the culprit when the facts tell a different story.
In response to “Obama leaves D.C. for 2-week vacation” (Aug. 10):
Obama took vacation, that’s
no reason to disrespect him
This article said the president “fled” on vacation.
No one ever said Congress “fled” for its five-week vacation.
I’ve never seen so much disrespect for a president as I have for Mr. Obama. I don’t like some of the things he has done, but he still deserves respect.
