From an editorial Friday in the Fayetteville Observer:
And so it’s really fall, in all its glory, that wonderful time of year when we savor wood smoke, colorful leaves and football, and our mouth waters at the prospect of … deep-fried peanut-butter pickles?
Well, OK, we hadn’t been thinking much about peanut-butter pickles in any season, but that’s one of many over-the-top treats available in the food courts at the N.C. State Fair, which opened on Thursday and runs for 11 days.
There’s also deep fried jalapeno pimento cheese and bacon hushpuppies with Sriracha bang bang dipping sauce. Or a slice of gummy bear pizza. Or for those less inclined to risky behavior, perhaps a scoop of Krispy Kreme ice cream.
But it’s not just food, of course. There are rides galore, including a new Super Cyclone roller-coaster. And plenty of animal exhibits – although no chickens or ducks this year, for fear of avian flu. But the racing pigs will be back.
Check it out online at ncstatefair.org. And check out the weather forecast too – clear skies and cool temperatures for the coming week. That’s real fair weather, for sure.
