In response to "Nuns, the Catholic church's jewels, are treated second class" (Oct. 27 What Others are Saying):

Investigate the Catholic bishops, not the nuns

A few weeks ago at mass at St. Peter's Catholic Church a group of elderly Sisters were seated a few rows ahead of me. It occurred to me that these women took the immigrant Catholic population and moved us to the front of the line with their dedicated teaching. A staff of dedicated Sisters from Philadelphia also helped run St. Anne Catholic School in Rock Hill, the first integrated school in S.C.

The Catholic Church would be better served by having the Sisters investigate the bishops - bishops who ignored and covered up the sexual abuse of children and have caused financial ruin to various U.S. dioceses.

Dowd's claims against the church way out of bounds

Columnist Maureen Dowd's false conclusions and bigotry against the Catholic Church are outrageous. Jesus was also hated by many when he was on earth in the flesh. Does she want to crucify the Catholic Church, too?

In response to "Charlotte would be settling for second-best with Foxx" (Oct. 25 Forum) and related articles:

Foxx won't settle for same old answers to this city's problems

Surely Forum writer Steve Meier knows Charlotte stands at a crossroads. Yet John Lassiter wants to stay on his comfortable old course that has us facing uncertainty. He talks about issues but offers no new vision or solutions.

Anthony Foxx has the vision and passion to work for something better. He has proven he won't settle for the same old answers. Through Foxx's innovative ideas, Charlotte now has the extra police officers we've needed for years. Through Foxx's creative support, CMS is rehiring top-notch teachers fired because of budget cuts.

To make Charlotte a real world-class city, we need more than self-driven talk. Foxx has the personal confidence to seek valuable expertise and insights from others. Foxx has state and federal connections that can put new ideas into action. We need Anthony Foxx to turn Charlotte toward a brighter future.

Lassiter offers a business savvy that Charlotte needs right now

In an Oct. 18 article the Observer said John Lassiter "brings a longer record of public involvement than any candidate in memory."

That breadth of experience is exactly what Charlotte needs. With his corporate and self-employed entrepreneurial background, he'll be more adept at recruiting businesses to the Queen City.

He is a fiscal conservative who has a record of opposing tax and fee increases. He's concerned about the out-migration of some citizens and companies to nearby counties and across the state line.

He's compassionate and will not permit the less-fortunate to be invisible. At this critical time, John Lassiter is the right man for the right job - mayor of Charlotte.

In response to "Latest CMS plans spark more debate" (Oct. 27) and related articles:

Way CMS handled East Meck just breeds greater mistrust

As a Charlotte native, long-time public education advocate and East Meck High School parent, I hoped the entire community would work together to find a solution for the assignment mess at our school.

The debate quickly deteriorated into different constituencies battling to protect their own interests at the expense of the greater good.

In addition to a dramatically different East Meck, the experience will produce more cynicism and mistrust toward CMS and exacerbate divisions within our community.

That's too bad for all of us.

Blue Cross spending a lot to push against public option

I wonder how much Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is spending to make robocalls and mail out a misleading flyer about the public option?

Couldn't that money be better spent to lower their costs to us?

Their actions are a strong argument in favor of a robust public option. It looks to me like they fear honest competition.

In response to "14 killed in 2 Afghan helicopter crashes" (Oct. 27) and related articles:

Bring troops home; spend that money on health care overhaul

It is blasphemous to send a generation of young Americans into the Middle East quicksand to be devoured or return home mutilated in mind and body.

Bring our troops back now and use those blood-drenched dollars to fund comprehensive health care for all Americans.
