8/3/09 Carolina Panthers (45) full back Brad Hoover smiles as a fan yells a question to him as he walks to the practice fields Monday evening at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. JEFF SINER - jsiner@charlotteobserver.com

Feud makes Bucs dangerous

Panthers fullback Brad Hoover says there's "bad blood" between these two franchises. That usually means each team receives the other's best effort.

Which means the Buccaneers' winless record probably won't matter a whole lot today when the teams take the field.

In other words, this isn't a gimme game for the Panthers, despite any modest momentum they might have picked up last week.

Teal snubbed for award?

Panthers punter Jason Baker won last week's NFC special-teams player-of-the-week award with a stout 44.0-net average. Just wondering: Should the award have gone instead to Quinton Teal, who's heads-up play - blocking a player into the returner who had already signaled for a fair catch - resulted in a fumble and led to the Panthers' winning touchdown?

Stat of the week

The Panthers scored four different ways against the Redskins - touchdown, field goal, safety and two-point conversion. That's the first time that's happened in Panthers history.

The Appalachian State effect

The Panthers and Bucs have added championship pedigree: Carolina signed former Appalachian State receiver Dexter Jackson to its practice squad this week. Tampa Bay signed ex-Mountaineers safety Corey Lynch on Sept.23. Both were instrumental in ASU's recent run of three NCAA Football Championship Subdivision titles.
