It is not often that John Kasay has an off day.
Sunday was one of them.
Kasay missed two field goals – the first time he's done that in a game since 2005 – as the Carolina Panthers lost 20-9 against the Buffalo Bills at Bank of America Stadium. Kasay's misfires – from 43 and 39 yards in the second quarter – ultimately weren't the difference in the Panthers losing. But they could have helped Carolina to a halftime lead had he made them.
The first came on fourth-and-inches, after the Panthers had driven to the Bills 26. Although the Panthers had gone for it on fourth-and-short situations twice in their previous two games, this time coach John Fox elected to go with Kasay.
Kasay missed the 43-yarder to the right, however. It was his second miss of the season after opening the year by making four straight.
Kasay then missed a 39-yarder to the left as time expired in the first half.
Kasay, who turns 40 Tuesday, made his first four field-goal attempts of the season, but has now missed three straight. He had one blocked last week in a victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The two field goals Kasay missed in 2005 were against the Arizona Cardinals – from 53 and 62 yards.
Notes
The Panthers were without injured outside linebacker Thomas Davis (hamstring) and fullback Brad Hoover (back). Landon Johnson filled in at weakside linebacker for Davis, who has led the Panthers in tackles this season.
Rookie Tony Fiammetta filled in for Hoover, who missed a game for the second time in three weeks.
Carolina's other inactives: Running back Tyrell Sutton, guard Duke Robinson, defensive tackle Nick Hayden, and safety Keith Lewis. A.J. Feeley was the third (emergency) quarterback. With Buffalo starting quarterback Trent Edwards out with a concussion, the Bills turned to receiver Roscoe Parrish to serve as their third (very emergency) QB.
Bills inactives were Edwards, safeties Donte Whiter and Bryan Scott, running back Xavier Omon, tackles Demetrius Bell and Jonathan Scott, tight end Shawn Nelson and defensive end Chris Ellis.
Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart left the game briefly in the first quarter with a hand injury but returned.
