The Carolina Panthers signed five-year veteran Mark Jones to handle kickoff and punt return duties while they wait for Ryne Robinson's recovery from a knee injury.
Jones, 27, was cut by San Diego on Saturday and will return to face the Chargers in the Panthers' season-opening game Sunday.
Jones played the previous three seasons in the NFC South with Tampa Bay. Last season, he averaged 28.6 yards on 10 kickoff returns and 11.9 yards on 12 punt returns.
After playing in college at Tennessee, he began his pro career in 2004 with the New York Giants, then moved to Tampa Bay in '05.
Jones is listed as a receiver, but has no career catches.
The Panthers cut receiver Dominique Thompson to make room for Jones on the 53-man active roster.
Practice squad moves
The Panthers filled out their practice squad by adding defensive end Angelo Craig (6-foot-5, 235 pounds), fullback Billy Latsko (5-10, 233) and receiver Titus Ryan (6-0, 193).
It's back to work
After two days off, the Panthers reconvene for meetings today, then are back on the practice field Wednesday to prepare for Sunday's season opener at San Diego.
