Panther player's home for sale on eBay

If you're having a tough time selling your house, you're not alone.

Even a well-known Carolina Panthers player isn't immune to the housing slowdown. Muhsin Muhammad is trying to sell a six-bedroom house in south Charlotte, and his agent says she just reduced the price by another $200,000.

"This was built for Muhsin and Christa Muhammad. It is a great house and it's a lot for your money," said real estate broker Brandy Hayes.

The home sits in a gated neighborhood near Highway 51 and is more than 8,600 square-feet. It's currently listed at $1.9 million, which is $200,000 less than when Hayes and her company, Brannic Martin Properties, took over the listing three months ago.

"We just wanted to be more appealing to some of those people who want to make deals right now," Hayes said. "You know, there are a lot of houses on the market in the million-dollar price range and up."

To get the word out about this one, Hayes enlisted the help of Muhammad and a friend of his who works as a Web developer.

"Just kind of came up with the idea of, 'Hey, let's put this house on eBay and see if we get any hits,'" said Hayes.

The ad on the popular online auction site discusses the housing downturn and the home's link to one of the NFL's top players. It also reveals that since Muhammad first started trying to sell the house, he's knocked $800,000 off the asking price.

Muhammad and his family no longer live in the house. They've since built a new one.

Has the eBay listing worked? Hayes said yes.

"It's worked really well, because we've gotten a lot of feedback from people around the country who have things to either sell or trade," Hayes said.

She said one man from Lincoln County wanted to trade some land. Another man contacted the seller about oceanfront property he owns in Florida. None of these have led to a deal, but Hayes says, in this market, you work with every lead you get.

"It doesn't matter who you are or how much money you have. It is tough right now. People are having to come up with new ways of thinking about how to they sell property," said Hayes.

This property overlooks a small private lake and offers a basketball court, an outdoor spa and a special feature you won't find in many other homes.

"This is one of the largest saltwater aquariums, I think, in all of North Carolina" said Hayes, describing the 2,200-gallon tank the Muhammads had installed in the daylight basement.

She hopes her heavy marketing and the eBay listing produces a qualified buyer. As for her business, she says she's weathering the real estate slowdown pretty well and that's due, in part, to the attraction of Charlotte.

"I've been one of those agents to be kind of blessed to have a lot of the relocation accounts because people are still moving to Charlotte," said Hayes.

Hayes mentioned the large number of $1 million-plus listings on the market. Our search of the Carolina Multiple Listing Service shows more than 330 homes above $1 million for sale in south and southeast Charlotte alone.

Still, Hayes is optimistic Muhsin Muhammad's Mediterranean showplace stands out in the crowded real estate field.

"It's a great house. You get lots for your money, lots of space for your money," said Hayes.
