Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason said Thursday afternoon during his weekly appearance on Charlotte sports radio station WFNZ (610 AM) that he plans to talk to defensive end Julius Peppers about Peppers' slow start so far this season.
Peppers, who is making more than $1 million per game, has had one sack and 10 tackles during Carolina's 0-3 start.
Beason said he watched the closing minutes of Minnesota's win over Green Bay Monday night, during which Vikings' defensive end Jared Allen had 41/2 sacks. It was the type of performance Panthers fans, and apparently some teammates, want from Peppers.
Beason said he received a phone call late in the game from someone discussing Peppers, to which Beason said he responded, “I'm going to have a conversation with that guy.”
“The pressure is what you want to see ...the intensity,” Beason of Peppers.
Beason said his conversation "would be brief and to the point."
Beason said he wouldn't be looking to criticize, but rather to say, "I need you to be therewith me.I need everything you've got. That's it in a nutshell."
After the show, Beason declined to elaborate when The Observer asked him about his comments.
Earlier, when a caller asked Beason why he thought Peppers would listen to him, Beason said they have a good relationship and are honest with one another.
"Pep is a guy of high character, a guy (who's) disciplined. He respect it when it's for real," said Beason. "I think we've got a good relationship. Whatever I say to him, just like whatever he says to me, we take to heart."
Notes
Panthers running back Mike Goodson was held out of practice again Thursday because of a concussion he suffered in a loss Sept. 28 against the Dallas Cowboys.
In the locker room after practice, Goodson said he felt “really good,” but didn't say whether he'd play Sunday against the Washington Redskins in Bank of America Stadium.
Otherwise, the team's injury situation remained the same. Practicing on a limited basis were defensive end Everette Brown (ankle), linebacker Na'il Diggs (ribs), fullback Tony Fiammetta (ankle), safety Chris Harris (knee), running back Jonathan Stewart (Achilles).
Tailgaters near the stadium before Sunday's game will be given two bags – one for garbage the other for recycling – as part of a program put on by the Panthers, Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful, Bojangles''', The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services/Special Services and Charlotte Center City Partners. The program will include a four-block area around the stadium.
Receiver Steve Smith will be at Mallard Creek High next Tuesday to help coach the Mavericks' football team and give advice on subjects such as drills, hydration, workout techniques, as well as playing in college and the NFL.
