Ardrey Kell's Giuseppe Gentile exhibited several of the traits that make a great striker and scorer in a three-goal performance against East Mecklenburg last week. His powerful shot combined with an excellent touch assisted in those goals.

Another neglected part of that finishing process is being in the right place at the right time. Gentile's first goal was an example of that as he finished off a rebound from a great save made by East Meck goalkeeper Montrell Morgan.

Marvin Ridge's Matt Risher and Garret Condon account for 75 percent of the offense for the Mavericks with 30 goals and 23 assists between them. Coach Ray Fumo says Risher plays with great technical skill and Condon has quickness and a powerful shot.

Charlotte Catholic leading scorer Sutton Porter uses deceptive quickness and touch, plus he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time as evidenced by his 24 goals and 10 assists this year, according to coach Oscar del Pino.

Several other strikers around the region have exhibited impressive scoring. Angel Rebollar at Concord Robinson has 17 goals and 10 assists. Coach Michael Hoke says Rebollar is one of the most "fluid natural players" he has coached.

Danner McCullough of Mooresville has 11 goals despite being out for three weeks with a broken toe, says coach Steve Stith.

Jeremy Dennis of Vance continues to provide scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates, in part because of his great vision.

Charlotte Latin's leading goal scorer is midfielder Will McGuiness, whose impressive stats (13 goals and 18 assists) are made possible, in part, by his great service on free kicks and composure in tight situations.

The N.C. Independent Schools will crown three state champions this week. In 3A, top seed Charlotte Latin - No.1 in the Sweet 16 and ranked 24th nationally - is at the opposite end of the bracket from No.2 seed Greensboro Day and is favored to advance to the final Saturday in Raleigh. The Hawks' 16-game winning streak ended with a 0-0 tie against Cannon School (Concord) last week in their last regular-season game. They will have a challenge locally from Providence Day.
