Providence Day girls' tennis team cruises to title

Providence Day's girls' tennis team defeated Raleigh Ravenscroft 7-2 to win the N.C. Independent Schools state championship Saturday at its home court.

The Chargers (26-2) got singles wins from Gabby Gabriel, Allyson Hoppe, Linley Busby and Victoria Lee. Providence Day swept the doubles.

The Chargers doubles teams were Umarah Mughnee and Gabriel, Kelly Cox and Marian Barrett and Hoppe and Busby.

Providence Day beat 3A public school state power Charlotte Catholic twice this season (9-0 and 8-1) and was unbeaten against N.C. private schools. The team won the consolation championship at the Corona Del Mar All-American tennis tournament in California.

Country Day wins field hockey crown

Charlotte Country Day (14-2) beat rival Charlotte Latin 1-0 in the N.C. Independent Schools field hockey finals at Durham Academy.

It was Latin's first loss of the season. The Hawks finished the season 16-1.
