Upsets in Union County: Monroe Parkwood (4-6, 1-3 Southern Carolina) knocked Marvin Ridge (8-2, 2-2) out of first place with a 21-20 win Friday. And Porter Ridge (7-3, 3-1) moved into first place with a 34-27 win against Anson Senior (6-4, 2-2). Porter Ridge, 3-8 last season, scored 21 straight points to win. Anson had four fumbles. UP

Harding girls' basketball: Rams will be a conference contender in the new ME-GA 7 conference this year thanks to a trio of star players: senior Phantasia Coe (12 points, 6 rebounds per game last season), sophomore Olivia Parker (11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks) and junior Brianna Key (13 points). Sarah Wiese, North Mecklenburg volleyball: seven aces, seven blocks and 13 kills in Vikings N.C. 4A quarterfinal win over rival Hopewell Saturday.

Ardrey Kell volleyball (23-5) at North Mecklenburg (25-2), N.C. 4A Western Regional championship, Tuesday, time TBA: North Meck beat Ardrey Kell in August. The rematch carries big stakes: a state championship berth. This will be the third time in four years that a Mecklenburg County team has reached the 4A finals. The last county winner, however, was Providence, which won in 2004 and 2005, for coach Zoe Bell. Bell is now coaching Ardrey Kell.
West Henderson (26-1) at Charlotte Catholic (24-5), N.C. 3A Western Regional championship, Tuesday, 6 p.m.: Catholic is 3-1 in state championship finals and goes for its first berth in eight seasons.

NCISAA football playoffs Friday: Victory Christian (1-7) is in the postseason and will play at CISAA tri-champ Country Day (9-1). The winner plays at CISAA tri-champ Charlotte Latin Nov. 13. On the other side of the bracket, Providence Day (3-7) is at Raleigh Ravenscroft (7-4). The winner plays at CISAA tri-champ Charlotte Christian (8-2) Nov. 13.
