After losing twice to rival Charlotte Latin this season, Charlotte Country Day's field hockey team beat the Hawks 1-0 in Saturday's N.C. Independent Schools state final.
It was Latin's first loss of the season.
Country Day reached the finals with a four-overtime 1-0 win over Durham Academy. In the finals, Giovanna Golen scored the championship-winning goal in the second half. Alison Dillard got the shutout in goal for Country Day.

Tickets went on sale Monday for Friday's Independence-Butler game at both schools. All tickets are being presold to students, who can buy six at a time. No tickets will be sold at the gate. The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., matches two undefeated nationally ranked teams.
Independence had 2,350 tickets and athletics director Kelly Lewis said he had 500 remaining Monday night. Figures from Butler, which had 1,900 tickets, were not available.
Charlotte Latin's girls won the NCISAA cross-country championship last week at Hagenstone Park in Pleasant Garden. Raleigh Providence Day's girls were second.
Ravenscroft's Wesley Frazier won the event. A freshman, she finished in 17 minutes, 36 seconds. Latin junior Haylee Dawe (18:49) was second.
The top 11 finishers made the all-state team. They included these area runners: Katie Lonergan and Maggie Gigler of Providence Day; Hannah Smith, Ally Finical and Kameron Spence of Charlotte Latin.
Durham Academy won the boys cross-country event last week and Cary Academy Thomas Graham won the individual title. Concord Cannon's Andrew Powell, Providence Day's Reed Payne and Jacob Dordick and Charlotte Christian's Luke Robinson all finished in the top 11 and made all-state.
Myers Park's girls (16-0) are in the N.C. 4A dual team tennis Western regional semifinals against Skyland Roberson (17-0). The teams play today at South Meck at 3:30 p.m. In the 3A playoffs, surprising Harding (12-2), a wild card playoff pick, is at Asheville in one regional semifinal. Harding's conference mate Charlotte Catholic (18-4) is at Marvin Ridge (14-2) in the other.
