Charlotte Catholic and Salisbury won N.C. dual-team tennis state championships in Burlington Saturday. Myers Park came up just short.
Catholic is eight for eight in state championship finals after a 5-1 win against Chapel Hill.
Catholic (21-4) won five of the six singles matches, led by No. 1 singles player Julia Paulson. She beat Tori Helpingstine 6-4, 6-2. Other Cougars singles winners were Meagan Laframboise, Lucia Leahy, Mary Kathryn Ferebee and Kelly Tomlin.
No doubles matches were played because the championship was decided.
Myers Park (18-1) lost its bid for an unbeaten season with a 5-2 loss to Raleigh Broughton. Broughton (19-0) won its ninth state title in 13 appearances and beat the defending state champions. Broughton won four of the six singles matches and earned the title when its doubles team of Katie Kane and Asha Iyengar won their doubles match.
Myers Park got singles wins from Grace Baker and Samantha Forlenza.
Salisbury didn't have to play doubles after sweeping its singles matches in a 5-0 win against Greene Central in the 2A finals.
Individual state champion Hannah Lebowitz beat Lauren Carraway 6-0, 6-1. Teammates Joy Loeblein, Katelyn Storey, Anna Page and Sierra Davis also won their matches.
Durham's N.C. School of Science and Math won the 1A title with a 5-1 win against East Montgomery.
