Lewis wraps up Vance career with strong baseball season

Wayne Lewis recently closed out a four-year varsity career at Vance with a fine senior baseball season. Lewis joined the team late because of his role as a key sub on the Cougars' basketball team, which advanced far into the state playoffs.

He logged an errorless 10 games, playing half at shortstop and half in centerfield, his natural position.

Lewis batted .406 in 32 at-bats and was perfect in 21 stolen base attempts. He also had four doubles and 10 runs batted in, all team highs.

"He's just a gifted athlete," said Vance coach Philip Culicerto. "I think, honest to goodness, that he could play for any team in (Charlotte), that he could start for any of those teams."

Lewis is drawing interest from St. Augustine (Raleigh), N.C. A&T and USC Upstate.
