Jacoby Davis

Jacoby Davis' family is moving, and it might change the balance of power in Mecklenburg County high school basketball.

Davis, a 6-foot junior guard, is transferring from Vance to West Charlotte, where the two-time all-conference star will play with Wake Forest-bound guard J.T. Terrell, a 6-3 senior who transferred from Burlington Cummings this year. Terrell, a top 100 national recruit, moved to Charlotte to live with his father, James “Trigger” Terrell, a former 49er.

Vance, expected to challenge for an N.C. 4A championship, is without three potential starters. Point guard Daryl Traynham moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Big man Enoch Hood moved to Virginia, and now Davis has left for West Charlotte, which will have three of the county's top guards. Julius Hamilton, a 6-3 sophomore, averaged double digits as a freshman.

“It just works for us financially to move into (the West Charlotte) area,” said Davis' father, Jacoby Davis Sr. “I told (Vance coach Will) Robinson that I think he's a great coach and me, my son and our family appreciate everything he's done. But for us as a family, this move works out better.”

Davis Sr. said his son has taken an unofficial visit to South Carolina and has attracted serious recruiting interest from Clemson, East Carolina, George Mason, High Point, Mississippi, Northeastern, South Carolina, Winthrop and Wright State.
