Q: After buying an extra-firm mattress from Sam's five years ago, which was a dreadful mistake, we are looking at something new and better. My husband and I are both mostly side sleepers, with some back sleeping. He is slightly built, and I am not! I awaken tired and with hip and shoulder pain daily. We're looking at a Sealy West Shore Plush Pillow Top and a Simmons Delaware Bay Pillow Top. Any advice before we take the plunge? Also, the store we have visited offers a 60-day free exchange policy if we're not happy. Is this normal? Thanks for the help!
Answered 07/01/08 15:02:29 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi M.J., The 60 day comfort gaurentee is generally normal for dealers to offer though some dealers don't. For side sleepers, a firm mattress is definately going to cause discomfort. The two models you listed are going to sleep a lot more comfortably for you. The primary difference between a Simmons and a Sealy is the coil system. We recommend the Simmons because it will dampen motion better when either of you turns over or gets in and out of bed. We do recommend trying a Plush Beautyrest or Sealy model before buying if you haven't already. Going from extremely firm to very soft isn't always the best sleep solution. There is an inbetween feel that side/back sleepers tend to like. We are unfamiliar with the Deleware Bay model, if you would like to price compare, call us toll free at 866-799-0048 and we can help you determine what our equivalent Beuatyrest is and make sure you're getting a good deal. Q: A week ago my husband and I bought a King Simmons Balthasar Plush. I was sold on the extra lumbar support since I have had lower back pain from our old Sleep Number bed for years. I sleep on back/side/stomach - basically all over the place. About 10 years ago we had a Simmons and loved it - and gave it to my parents. Now I am having significant pain in my midback the reaches around my sides, and the lumbar support just seems higher than it did in the store. Do you think this could just be because I need to get used to the new mattress, or is there something else you would suggest that would be better?
Answered 06/30/08 14:30:58 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Amy, We suggest trying a mattress for at least 14 days before deciding to exchange it to really give it a chance. But if you are extremely uncomfortable, then head back to your dealer. The extra lumbar support in the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Balthazar Plush. The extra support comes from half sized coils inside the normal individually wrapped coils. The extra support only kicks in if the lumbar area compresses halfway or more. In your case, it sounds like the coils aren't compressing enough. Of the three positions you sleep in, is there one you sleep in more? A good way to know is to figure out the position you fall asleep in the easiest and which you wake up in the most frequently. Is there anything you would change about the mattress as well(Firmer or softer)? Let us know and we can help you find a better night's rest! Q: Hi! I'm glad I found this Q & A. My 75 yr old mom is considering an adjustable bed because she sleeps with her head elevated and feels that she'd sleep better. What mattresses would you recommend?
Answered 06/30/08 14:16:14 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Iris, For adjustable beds, we recommend foam mattresses like Tempur-Pedic and Comfor-Pedic. Foam mattresses are uniquely designed to respond to pressure and when adjustable bases change the direction pressure is applied, all foam mattresses adapt the best to the new sleeping environment. If your mom doesn't like foam mattresses, Classic Beautyrest models can also be made for adjustable beds and she can choose from any comfort level(firm, plush or pillow top). The comfort level depends on how your mom sleeps. We have a a lot of options for adjustable bases and mattresses. Call us toll free at 866-799-0048 for more information and pricing. Q: I am shopping for mattress. I found pillow tops models are too soft. Firmer types are too firm. It looks that the one in the middle called Plush is ok. I saw in Mattresses Firm stores, Beautyrest World Class, Cape Horn, Plush, 980 coil count, 15 1/2 gauge, with Visco memory and convoluted foam, and Allercare comfort. What is the equivalent in your models? and the salesman offered me a deal 1199$ for queen. Do you think it is a good mattress on longterm? is this a fair price? Thanks Leo
Answered 06/24/08 14:26:24 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Leo, Plush models are the in between if you think that the Pillow Tops are too soft and Firm's too firm. There are Plush/Firm models as well that have the 13 3/4 gauge coil and it feels a bit firmer, but for side sleepers we recommend the Plush model with the softer coils because the softer coils are more sensitive to pressure. We do have an equivalent to the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Cape Horn Plush, it's called the World Class Lusaka Visco Plush on our website at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=674. The Lusaka Plush and Cape Horn Plush share the same coil construction and foam layers, including a layer of visco memory foam. The Aloe Care layer is specific to Mattress Firm but it's not a comfort layer so it won't affect how the mattress sleeps. To keep your mattress clean, we recommend a waterproof mattress protector regardless if the mattress has an aloe layer or not. Keeping the mattress clean is important for durability and to stay covered on your warranty. The $1,199 price is pretty good. Our queen set is normally $1,199 as well. Right now, you can save a few extra bucks with our website sale. Check out the website for additional savings before the 4th of July. Thanks for your question! Q: Our Sealy Island Manor Firm queen mattress is sinking into the middle....we purchased it in Jan 2008....only 6 months ago!!!!
What shall we replace it with?
Answered 06/23/08 10:38:29 by Greg and Katy Law
A: HI Jeanna, Call your dealer and see if they will replace it. Show them or tell them about the problem and give your dealer the chance to make things right. Firm mattresses shouldn't sink very quickly. If they do, it's because the coil system is not holding up. Firm models don't have a lot of foam layers so that isn't where they break down. If the center is caving in, be sure to check you have proper center support underneath the mattress in the frame. If the mattress dealer sold you a frame, you'll have to see if they can fix it for you. If you decide to get another mattress, call us toll free at 866-799-0048 or e-mail us direct at info@sdmattress.com with your zip code and we'll point you to some Simmons Beautyrest dealers in your area to try some models and see what you think. Q: I am in need of a new mattress. I now have a 'sleep number' bed for about 5 years and have NEVER been able to find my 'number'. Finally talked my husband (who can sleep on anything) into looking for something else. I went to Sleepys and did the diagnostic bed thing. Then tried some mattresses.I likes the Simmons Balthasar plush but I felt I was on the 'deal or no deal' show. The 'manager' was helping me and he told me of a 'deal' from their warehouse. Came back with $500 off the retail "because the warehouse is overstocked". told me he could hold that price for a day so I can bring my husband in to try it out. I said ok (no harm no foul)Then, he gets on the phone again for whatever reason I don't know but talks to 'the banker' who gives him a BETTER price for me. $1800 out the door! BUT, I had to put a deposit on that to hold the price. I came home to do some research and cannot find that model online anywhere. Is this a fancy name Sleepys uses so you can't compare them to other stores? Is the same mattress out there under a different name?

A: Hi Linda, Thanks for participating on our column. Sleepy's is known for their high powered sales tactics and your experience is no exception. There are equivalent models out there in terms of foam layers and regular tall coils in the World Class line up. Sleepy's has a gimmick that inflates their coil counts to not match the standard, for more information on Sleepy's extra features, call us toll free at 866-799-0048. The equivalent in our line up to the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Balthazar Plush is the World Class Lusaka Visco Plush on our website at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=674. Our Lusaka Visco Plush has the exact same foam layers including a layer of visco memory foam in the upholstery. The coil systems are the same with the exception of Sleepy's smaller coils in the lumbar section. Sleepy's has the different coil design to make price comparing a nightmare and so they don't pricematch unless they're feeling extra aggressive for sales. The mattresses feel identical and we have had a lot of success with consumers who've gotten the Lusaka based on shopping at Sleepy's. The Lusaka Visco Plush is available for $1,199 queen set, $1,499 king set, prices include mattress, foundation, nationwide shipping in 2-3 weeks, delivery and installation, and no sales tax(except in NC and CA). Call us toll free at 866-799-0048 with any more questions and be sure to check out our website at www.sdmattress.com for coupons. Thanks again! Q: hello;after much searching, I just bought a Simmons Enjoyment mattress from Mattress Discounters. I thought this was an ultra plush but is actually noting on the tag a plush. It doesn't feel as soft as it did in the showroom (maybe it will give some) & I was restricted to the size as a pillowtop is too high for my bed (new bed has a low footboard). Is this a good mattress? it was lower end in price & I am concerned I should have "stepped up more". The salesman told me it is just like the Heavenly Bed only w/o the pillow top. I am a side sleeper & need help w/ pressure points. Is the Viola in their Black line substantially better? Most of the latex models felt too firm & not enough "give". Thank you for any info you can provide.
Answered 06/20/08 15:06:20 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Melissa, For a side sleeper, this model will be comfortable. Only time will tell if it's too firm on your pressure points. Definately give it some time, two weeks or more. Just be sure to contact the dealer to exchange it before their comfort gaurentee runs out if you are not sleeping comfortably. You can also add some foam layers if you need just a little bit more comfort. In comparison to the Black line, your current Beautyrest is more responsive to side sleepers as the coils in the Black line are very firm. If you're having pressure point issues, we recommend either a Classic or World Class model as a better match up. The Foam layers up the line are somewhat similar, Simmons' just makes them firmer and firmer underneath to offer more motion separation. This way, they give each consumer the ability to mix and match their comfort levels to find the right Beautyrest. In our book, you picked the right kind of model. Let us know if you have any more questions and we hope to hear you're sleeping great! Kind regards, Greg and Katy Law www.sdmattress.com 866-799-0048

Q: Thanks for answering my earlier question. I wanted to find a mattress locally equivalent to World Class Prague Luxury Firm to test it out, but have been unable to locate one. I've determined thus far, at least on the floor models I've tested, that the World Class Atkins Plush Firm is too soft, the World Class Angelique Extra Firm and Oslo Extra Firm are too hard, and the Black Edaline Plush was wonderful. Unfortunately, I don't really want to pay that much for the Edaline. Is there anything very similar to the Edaline in the World Class level? I sleep on my side, and my husband sleeps on his back and side. Thanks so much!
Answered 06/20/08 14:52:14 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Pam, There isn't much more to try for a firm feel with plush foams. Only the Exceptionale's which are between the World Class and Exceptionale's in terms of firmness, though they tend to feel very firm underneath the foams and are usually as expensive as the Black Line models, though we usually have good deals. Based on what you've already tried, we recommend our Exceptionale Harare Visco Plush at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=679. There is also a Plush/Firm version which is a little firmer. Try looking for an Ashton Plush model at Macy's, or a Plush Exceptionale model at other Beautyrest dealers. If you want something between the Plush/Firm and a Firm in the World Class Line, the Exceptionale's are just that. See if you can find them locally and let us know if you have any more questions. I am very underweight and have no fat. I weigh 100 my hubby
225.I sleep mainly on stomach. The bed I wanted was
the World Class and about 400-500 more. I am a very light
sleeper. The mattress we have now(not a good one) we have was given to us by a neighbor who didn't like it as it was too firm.I am excited to get delivery by the first of the week. Did we make a good choice considering the money we had to work with? Thanks..... Linda Oregon
Answered 06/20/08 13:58:50 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Linda, For stomach sleeping, you've gotten a pretty good match up if your firm mattress isn't comfortable for you now. Some stomach sleepers need a little comfort on the mattress, especially if you occasionally sleep on your side. We think you'll be very happy with your decision for the Simmons Beautyrest Classic Carter Plush. If you would like to see the detailed spec's of this model, we have an equivalent on our website called the Classic Cairo Plush at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=668. A: Hi Sam, Thanks for your question. The Paris is a World Class Beautyrest that features a layer of visco memory foam in the upholstery. Our equivalent model is called the World Class Lusaka Visco Super Pillow Top Plush on our website at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=644. The Lusaka and Paris models share the same World Class coil construction and same foam layers, including a layer of visco memory foam in the upholstery. Q: Hi Greg and Katy, I am a stomach sleeper and tried out a couple of Simmons beds at Sleepy's. The Balthasar Plush was really comfy, and I could imagine falling asleep on it easily, but it also seemed a little too cushy for me. The Montague Plush/Firm was fine, but maybe a little too firm under the plush. I tried to do some research online on these two mattresses but wasn't sure what they'd be called--what other names do they go by? Also, can you think of a mattress or a couple that might be in between these two in terms of firmness? Thanks a lot!
Answered 06/18/08 14:08:08 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Jordan, We do have some options to point out to you. Lets start with comparing so you can see detailed information. The Simmons Classic(Silver) Montague Plush/Firm model is our Classic Gabarone Plush/Firm at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=669 and the World Class(Gold) Balthazar Plush is our Lusaka Plush at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=674. Plush/Firm's come with firmer coils that are a lot less yeilding so if you don't want to go this firm, the World Class Plush is exactly where we would point you. Another avenue to try would be an Exceptionale Plush model. The Exceptionale's have a firmer coil construction combining two layers of coils, a firm layer underneath a soft layer. The softer layer gives some comfort while you still get firm support. We think the Balthazar Plush/Lusaka Plush model would be a good enough match up, especially if you or your wife do any side sleeping ever. Firmer coil systems are a lot harder on pressure points while side sleeping. Let us know if we can help you with any more questions about mattress options or your sleep criteria! Q: Hello, my husband and I just purchased a Simmons World Class (Kimble Visco) Plush mattress (which hasn't been delivered yet). Since then I've read numerous compliants on the internet about the foam breaking down on the World Class mattresses and creating a "sinking" feeling within 6 months. There were also a lot of compliants about sagging in the middle. We really loved the mattress in the store but are considering seeing if we can switch to the World Class Firm instead and just add a foam top (we are side/stomach sleepers). Do you have any information about Plush tops breaking down? Thanks and have a great day!
Answered 06/18/08 14:01:37 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Jessica, Sagging issues are much more prevalent to Super Pillow Top mattresses of not only Simmons, but every "S" Brand in the mattress industry. Plush models are built to resist this tendancy to sag because they have less foam layers and tighter sewn quilting which compresses foam layers, keeping them from breaking down. If you got a Firm comfort level mattress, adding a topper wouldn't quite be the same as a Plush since Firm models have firmer coils that are less sensitive to pressure. If you're worried about impressions, the Plush's are a better bed. Check out our equivalent mattress to the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Kimble Visco Plush, ours is called the World Class Lusaka Visco Plush on our website at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=674. The Lusaka and Kimble Plush models share the exact same World Class coil construction and exact same foam layers, including a layer of visco memory foam in the upholstery. The Lusaka Plush's regular price is $1,199 Queen set, $1,499 King set, prices include mattress, foundation, nationwide shipping in 2-3 weeks, delivery and installation, and no sales tax(except in NC & CA). Q: Hi There, We have decided to buy the Simmons equivalent to the Heavenly Bed but would like to be sure we try before we buy. Can you please let us know what the name of that bed is at an Arizona (Phoenix) retailer so we can try it there and buy an equivalent model from you? Thanks so much have a wonderful day! Tina
Answered 06/18/08 12:50:51 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Tina-Marie, The Westin Heavenly bed is a popular model nationwide. The Heavenly Bed is a Classic Simmons Beautyrest with a small pillow top. You can find local models at Macy's called the Classic Adrian Pillow Top or at Mattress Firm called the Classic De Soto Falls Pillow Top. If you find a model and aren't sure if it's a small pillow top, ask the dealer for detailed foam information and compare it to our equivalent model, the Classic Dakar Pillow Top on our website at http://sdmattress.com/store/index.php?prodid=642. For comparison shopping, our regular price for the Classic Dakar Pillow Top is $849 Queen set, $1,099 King set, prices include mattress, foundation, nationwide shipping in 2-3 weeks, white glove delivery and installation, and no sales tax(except in NC & CA). Visit Simmons.com and enter your zip code in the dealer locater to find your local Simmons dealer. Call us toll free at 866-799-0048 if you have any questions about what you find. Thanks for posting! Q: I had planned to buy a Simmons Beautyrest Felicia Plush (no pillowtop); however, my sister and her husband recently purchased a Tempur-pedic Deluxe w/an adjustable base, and they love it! They are really encouraging me to buy the same bed. I tried in the store, and though I think it will take some time to grow accustomed to the memory foam, I was really impressed by the adjustable base and the comfort level w/the upper and lower portions of the bed raised. I have several questions: If I really liked the Felicia Plush, does it make sense that I would be comfortable in a Tempur-pedic? Which Tempur-pedic model most closely resembles the comfort and support of the Felicia Plush? Will the Felicia work with an adjustable base? (I'm a side sleeper.) Thank you!
Answered 06/16/08 11:08:52 by Greg and Katy Law
A: Hi Gia, Simmons does make adjustable Beautyrest mattresses, but when it comes to how you feel when sleeping and being propped up, the all foam mattresses are the better bed. Foam mattresses like Tempur-Pedic's are built to conform and by using an adjustable base, you're accenting it's unique feel to respond to pressure in new ways. The Deluxe bed by Tempur-Pedic is their most popular and closest feeling model to a regular coil mattress. It's not too thick and not to thin to really get away from the comfortable yet supportive feel. Most people feel more comfortable in an adjustable bed instead of on a regular flat mattress. If you prop your head and feet up, your heart will pump blood through your body easier and your back will sleep pressure free. You can tell the difference in your back when you lay the adjustable bed flat. Thanks for your question and let us know. We have adjustable bed options for both Tempur-Pedic and Simmons mattresses and can help narrow down your selection. Kind regards, Greg and Katy Law www.sdmattress.com 866-799-0048
