The Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday night to delay the county manager’s recommendation on an outside investigation of the 2011 property revaluation and to involve citizens in the review process.

After concerns were raised by residents, Mecklenburg officials recently removed a page from a county website that incorrectly told property owners they’d need an attorney to take their appeals of last year’s revaluation to the state.

Cornelius and Huntersville leaders - still upset about the way the county reset property values last year - now want an outside audit of the Mecklenburg Assessor’s Office.

Two weeks after the county agreed to review the way it assessed Lake Norman area properties, Cornelius leaders are calling for a broad overhaul of the revaluation formula, while leaders in other parts of the county are gearing up to request similar reviews for their constituents.

As Mecklenburg County continues to sort through remaining appeals from the 2011 property revaluation, officials are pitching a new way of setting a date for the next one.

Mecklenburg County commissioners were told Tuesday they can't stop the county's property revaluation appeals, despite requests from Cornelius officials to push the stop button until concerns from residents are addressed.

When Mecklenburg homeowners receive their new property revaluation notices next month, county assessors say they believe "most" will see their tax values rise.
