A former Providence College basketball player is out on bond following accusations that he failed to register as a sex offender.
WPRI-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2fywWkx ) Abdul Abdullah was released after an initial court appearance in Rhode Island this week and is scheduled to return for a pre-arraignment conference in October.
Abdullah pleaded guilty to statutory rape in 2005 in Georgia and moved back to Rhode Island after serving a six-month sentence. He was arrested last month in Cranston on a warrant from Georgia for violating his probation.
Abdullah later told media that he didn't believe he was required to register as a sex offender.
His lawyer told WPRI-TV he doesn't want to comment until he sees documents from the Georgia case. A conference for that case is scheduled for next week.
