Charlottean Thai Kwiatkowski won the men’s singles title at the NCAA tennis tournament Monday in Athens, Ga.
Kwiatkowski, a senior at Virginia, beat North Carolina freshman William Blumberg 6-4, 7-6 in the title match. Blumberg, the ACC Freshman of the Year, had beaten Kwiatkowski twice previously this season.
Kwiatkowski’s reward for winning the tournament : An entry into the U.S. Open singles draw in August.
Kwiatkowski started playing tennis at 5. He won his first national tournament at 8, and eventually began training at the U.S. Tennis Association’s facility in Boca Raton, Fla.
He showed great promise as a young player with a game built around a huge forehand.
Kwiatkowski helped Virginia win the team tennis title last week.
“There were so many adversity moments before and after the match,” Kwiatkowski said, via the Virginia athletics web site. “I was almost crying with how nervous I was.”
Kwiatkowski finished his college career 136-24 in singles matches.
