Briefly: The nonscholarship Camels, who just began playing football themselves in 2008, have a new coach in former Panthers defensive back Mike Minter. The Camels’ top player is sophomore running back Dalton Dillon, a second-team all-Pioneer League choice last season.

Chowan Hawks

Coach: Tim Place (sixth year, 16-34; 27-45 overall)

NCAA classification: Division II (CIAA)

Briefly: Senior receiver Robert Holland led the CIAA in receptions (69) and receiving yards (914) as a sophomore in 2011 and holds nine school records.

Sept. 14

N.C. Central Eagles

Last season: 6-5

Coach: Dwayne Foster (interim)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Mid-Eastern Athletic)

Briefly: Eagles have 10 total starters returning, including quarterback Jordan Reid, who threw for 1,594 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Last season: 7-4

Coach: Mickey Matthews (103-63, 15th year)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Colonial Athletic)

Briefly: The Dukes finished the 2012 season ranked 19th nationally. Linebacker Stephon Robertson is the CAA’s preseason defensive player of the year.

At Presbyterian Blue Hose

Last season: 2-9

Coach: Harold Nichols (6-36, fifth year)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Big South)

Briefly: Blue Hose’s only victories last season were against Davidson and Division II Brevard. Linebacker Donelle Williams is one of the top players in the Big South.

Oct. 5

Gardner-Webb Bulldogs

Coach: Carroll McCray (first year; 5-6 overall)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Big South)

Briefly: Bulldogs are picked to finish third in Big South this season and linebacker Tanner Burch was the nation’s second-leading tackler in 2012 (12.6 per game).

UNC Pembroke Braves

Coach: Pete Shinnick (50-23, eighth year; 103-45 overall)

NCAA classification: Division II (independent)

Briefly: The Braves have 17 starters back, including senior quarterback Luke Charles, who threw for 2,153 yards and 15 touchdowns.

At Charleston Southern Buccaneers

Coach: Jamey Chaldwell (first year; 25-21 overall)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Big South)

Briefly: The Bucs have a new coach in Jamey Chadwell. Running back Teddy Allen rushed for 576 yards and nine TDs last season.

At Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Last season: 8-5

Coach: Joe Moglia (8-5, second year)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Big South)

Briefly: Chanticleers made it to the second round of last season’s FCS playoffs. Wide receiver Matt Hazel (61 catches for 799 yards and eight TDs) and linebacker Quinn Backus (school-record 139 solo tackles) are Big South’s preseason players of the year.

Nov. 9

Wesley (Del.) Wolverines

Coach: Mike Drass (177-49-1, 22nd year)

NCAA classification: Division III (Atlantic Central Football)

Briefly: Fifth-ranked Wesley is a Division III power, making the national playoffs the past eight seasons. Safety Jared Morris and linebacker Sosthene Kapepula are all-Americans.

Nov. 22

At Morehead State Eagles

Last season: 4-7

Coach: Rob Tenyer (first year)

NCAA classification: Division I FCS (Pioneer)

Briefly: Running back Rees Macshara gained 1,013 yards last season and linebacker Jordan Hendrix had a school-record 123 tackles.
