Matchup to watch
Charlotte NG Larry Ogunjobi vs. Elon C Austin Sowell: Ogunjobi is the centerpiece of the 49ers’ improving defensive line and has 2.0 sacks and 4.5 tackles-for-loss already this season. Sowell is the only senior on an otherwise inexperienced Elon defensive line and has started 26 consecutive games.
• The 49ers’ plans to redshirt true sophomores this season continue to diminish. The latest is linebacker Justin Bridges-Thompson, who didn’t play the first two games, but is back after injuries to senior Caleb Clayton-Molby and junior Nick Cook. Clayton-Molby and Cook will be able to take medical redshirts this season since they both will have played in less than 30 percent of Charlotte’s games. Cook, who sprained his ankle in the season opener against Campbell, will be off crutches next week. Clayton-Molby who tore an MCL, is out for the season.
• Freshman punter Arthur Hart had the best game of his young college career against N.C. Central. Hart average 42.8 yards on six punts (including a career-long of 57 yards) and had impressive hang time on most of them.
• Elon is in rebuilding mode after going 2-10 last season. After 11 years in the Southern Conference, the Phoenix is in its first year in the Colonial Athletic Association and was a preseason pick to finish last in the league.
• 49ers head trainer A.J. Lukjanczuk is an Elon alum and former Phoenix assistant trainer.
