Darius Ramsey ran 17 times for 113 yards and Western Carolina snapped a 22-game road losing streak with a 35-17 win Saturday against Furman.
Ramsey’s 19-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes, 32 seconds left in the first half gave Western Carolina (3-1, 1-0 Southern) all the points it would need with a 21-3 lead.
Troy Mitchell was 12-for-19 for 182 yards and added 70 yards rushing on 16 carries. Detrez Newsome added two touchdown runs for the Catamounts, who outrushed Furman 233-106 and beat the Paladins (2-3, 1-1) for the first time since 2005 and the first time on the road since 1994.
Campbell 34, Valparaiso 24: Dakota Wolf threw a 15-yard touchdown pass and ran in the final go-ahead score to lift Campbell at home against Valparaiso in a Pioneer League opener. Both teams are 1-3 overall.
Wingate 21, UNC Pembroke 3: Wingate (3-1) limited the Braves (1-3) to 120 yards of offense – 25 on the ground – in the home victory. Kyle Johnson completed 19 of 29 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and Jordan Berry caught eight passes for 136 yards.
Carson-Newman 35, Catawba 33: Host Catawba (2-2, 1-1) had more than 500 yards of offense, but it came up short against No. 19 Carson-Newman (3-1, 2-0) in a South Atlantic Conference game.
The Citadel 37, Gardner-Webb 14: Aaron Miller ran for three touchdowns and Eric Goins kicked three field goals for The Citadel (1-3) at home against Gardner-Webb. Lucas Beatty was 29 of 35 for 280 yards and a touchdown for Gardner-Webb (2-3). He also scored a rushing TD. Kenny Cook had nine receptions for 103 yards.
Wofford 49, Virginia-Wise 15: Octavius Harden ran for two touchdowns and Jaleel Green returned an interception 40 yards for a score as host Wofford (2-2) beat Division II Virginia-Wise.
S.C. State 17, Hampton 10: Jalen Simmons ran for 129 yards and scored the tie-breaking touchdown for S.C. State (3-2, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic) at Hampton (1-4, 0-1).
N.C. A&T 38, Howard 22: Freshman Marquell Cartwright ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries for the Aggies (4-1, 1-0 MEAC) at Howard (1-4, 0-2). Kwashaun Quick threw for 200 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 14-for-23 passing in the first half, and also caught a 3-yard touchdown pass. He missed the second half because of injury.
