CHAPEL HILL -- The good new for UNC: The Tar Heels are better than N.C. State. The bad news for the Heels: They don't have any more games left on the schedule against the Wolfpack.
The Tar Heels completed a season sweep of the Wolfpack, 74-61 on Saturday at the Smith Center. UNC's 3-7 in the ACC with a pair of wins over the Wolfpack and a 1-7 record against everyone else.
N.C. State (14-12, 2-9) lost for the eighth straight time in the series and are 0-7 against UNC coach Roy Williams at the Smith Center.
The Heels honored more than 200 former players at the half in a season-long celebration of the 100 years of UNC basketball. The current players gave them reason to cheer.
In perhaps Deon Thompson's best all-around game of the season, the senior forward scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, blocked three shots and three steals. Guard Larry Drew II added 14 points and six assists.
Forward Tracy Smith led the Wolfpack with 18 points, but as usual, he had little assistance. Javier Gonzalez (13 points) is the only other Wolfpack player in double-figures.
A late 10-0 first-half run by the Heels gave them a 33-31 lead at the break. The Heels stretched it out to 10 midway through the second half before State made a mini-run to make 56-52 with 6:19 left.
John Henson scored a three-point play and Drew hit a 3-pointer, the dagger at 3:45, to end any hope of Wolfpack comeback.
