Fayetteville State showed why it earned the CIAA South’s top seed on Wednesday.
The Broncos dominated from the opening tip in a 70-47 win against J.C. Smith in the second round of the league’s tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena. Fayetteville State (20-6), which grabbed a 26-19 advantage at halftime, reeled off a 12-4 run to put the Golden Bulls (14-13) away.
Four Broncos starters hit double digits, with Deja Middleton’s 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting leading all scorers. Akysia Resper chipped in 16, Amber Calvin 14 and JeLena Robertson 10.
Karnina Bunch was the Golden Bulls’ top scorer with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Porscha Walton topped St. Augustine’s (13-13) with 13 points, the only Falcon to break double figures.
Donia Naylor paced Bowie State with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting as well as a game-best 17 rebounds. No other Bulldog scored more than seven points.
Pam Zephrah paced Lincoln, the North’s sixth seed, with 16 points.
