Funeral arrangements for the late West Charlotte High boys basketball coach Charles McCullough have been set.
McCullough passed away last week at the age of 84 after a long battle with a respiratory illness. His family said a Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2020 Sugar Creek Rd. A private burial will follow.
McCullough was boys’ basketball coach at West Charlotte from 1960-94. His teams won nearly 600 games and five state championships, including three from 1986-93.
Never miss a local story.
"Coach McCullough was absolutely instrumental to my personal and athletic success,” said former West Charlotte two-time Mecklenburg County player of the year Thad Bonapart. Bonapart was a central figure on McCullough’s final two state championships in 1991 and ‘92. “He provided me the platform and opportunity to display my talents at West Charlotte the school, but more importantly West Charlotte the community. I pray that coach rests in peace.”
