Even though it was a one-sided season-opener, there was still a lot to be learned for both teams from the A.L. Brown Wonders’ 56-0 football victory at Hopewell on Friday night.
A.L. Brown, a 4A playoff team last season, has moved to Class 3A, and looks to contend in its new conference. Hopewell, 1-10 last season and with its fifth new coach in six seasons, is still a work in progress.
Quarterback Jordan Medley rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and passed for another, and running back Nick Lyerly rushed for two more scores for the Wonders.
But the decisive play was a defensive stop after a turnover. With his team down 14-0 early in the second quarter, Titans defensive back Quay Barber intercepted a pass by Medley at his 10 and returned it 76 yards to the Wonders’ 14 before running back Jaron Cooper made a touchdown-saving tackle.
Never miss a local story.
Hopewell came up empty in four plays from there.
“It was a big play by our running back, and kept it from being a different game,” Brown coach Mike Newsome said.
Quote: “We scored points, but we made a lot of mistakes. We’re not that young, but we do have players who don’t have a lot of playing experience. We’ll do fine if we can tighten up a route by a yard here or complete a block there — the little things.” – Brown
Records: A.L. Brown 1-0; Hopewell 0-1.
Worth mentioning: The Wonders moved the ball well throughout the game, but had to overcome a sputtering offensive start. Four A.L Brown runs of 20 yards or more were nullified by penalties in the first quarter alone.
What's Next: Both teams play at home Friday. Hopewell plays host to Independence at 7 and A.L. Brown hosts Marvin Ridge at 7:30.
