South Mecklenburg senior, Graham Weaver, and Hough sophomore, Will Chan, had state championship performances they will never forget.
Weaver and Chan share co-Charlotte Observer boys’ swimmer of the year honors for their efforts.
Weaver and South Mecklenburg coach, Leslie Berens, the Charlotte Observer boys’ swimming coach of the year, helped the Sabres to their second straight 4A state championship.
Weaver, a University of North Carolina signee, led the way winning the 50 freestyle (20.76) while anchoring the 200 medley relay (state record, 1:32.58) and the 200 freestyle relay to state titles.
The South Mecklenburg senior was also the 4A state runner-up in the 100 freestyle.
Meanwhile, Chan, the 4A state championship most outstanding swimmer, won the 200 individual medley (55.21) and 100 breaststroke (1:49.86), 4A state titles, while helping Hough’s 400 freestyle relay to another state crown.
Chan tied the state record (55.14) in the 100 breaststroke in the preliminaries.
The Hough sophomore also helped his 200 medley relay to a state runner-up as his Husky team also finished as 4A state runner-up.
▪ Coach Patty Waldron also led her Charlotte Latin boys’ swim team to their fourth straight, NCISAA 3A state championship.

50 Freestyle: Graham Weaver, South Mecklenburg, Sr.: University of North Carolina signee was 4A state champion (school-record, 20.76) in the fastest event.
100 Freestyle: Graham Weaver, South Mecklenburg, Sr.: SoMeck8 conference swimmer of the year was 4A state runner-up here (45.57).
200 Freestyle: Coleman Manchester, Hough, Jr.: 4A state runner-up (1:40.69) also 4A West Regional champion.
500 Freestyle: Nathan Murray, South Mecklenburg, Sr.: University of Tennessee signee was 4A state champion in impressive, 4:30.38.
100 Butterfly: Ikenna Eruchalu, Charlotte Latin, Jr.: Latin standout won the NCISAA 3A state championship in a state record, 49.58.
100 Backstroke: Nathan Murray, South Mecklenburg, Sr.: Sabre standout finished 5th at 4A state meet, after winning 4A West Regional title.
100 Breaststroke: Will Chan, Hough, So.: 4A state champion (55.21) tied the state record in preliminaries (55.14).
200 Individual Medley: Will Chan, Hough, So.: 4A state championship’s most outstanding swimmer won another state title here (1:49.86).
Diving: Nick Garberina, Pine Lake Prep, So.: 1A/2A state champion set a 1A/2A state record with 456.25 points to win it all.
200 Medley Relay: South Mecklenburg (Nathan Murray, Jacob Rauch, Graham Cooper, Graham Weaver): Sabres’ quartet set a state record (1:32.58) to win the 4A state championship, set a great tone in meet’s first event.
200 Freestyle Relay: South Mecklenburg (Noah Cahan, Jacob Rauch, Luke Johnson, Graham Weaver): Sabres’ relay won another state title here (1:24.89).
400 Freestyle Relay: Hough (Hernan Gonzales, Coleman Manchester, Connor McCourt, Will Chan): Huskies’ relay won a 4A state title (3:07.97) here to cap 4A state runner-up team finish.
