Butler High baseball player Tyler Tewell, an All-Observer pick last spring, committed to Appalachian State.
Tewell, a rising senior who plays several positions, hit for the cycle twice, and batted .398, with 23 runs, 29 RBIs, four home runs and 18 extra-base hits.
Providence third baseman Richie Shaffer, a rising senior, will play on national television Saturday. He is among 38 players picked to play in the Aflac All-American Game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The game will be broadcast at 3p.m. on Fox Sports South.
Shaffer, who has committed to Clemson, has been an All-Observer pick the past two seasons.
As a junior, he batted .410 with eight home runs, 17 extra-base hits and 30 RBIs.
Shaffer's trip has included visits to a children's hospital and Universal Studios. He will compete in a home run derby today.
Charlotte Christian catcher Scott Glover, a rising senior, committed to High Point. … Kings Mountain pitcher Jeff Howell committed to Gardner-Webb.
Charlotte Christian has added Jireh Prep as its Sept.26 homecoming opponent. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
Jireh Prep replaced Raleigh Christian on the schedule.
Coaches have been named for the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game next July in Greensboro.
Scott Cloninger (Lincolnton) will coach the West team, with assistants Barclay Marsh (Mooresville), Steve Maennie (Skyland Roberson), Alex Mebane (Trinity), Baxter Morris (Albemarle) and Dee Walsh (Robbinsville).
Raymond Cobb (Southwest Edgecombe) will coach the East, with assistants Grover Battle (Northern Nash), Brian Foster (Southern Nash), Kenneth Grantham (Greene Central), Ken Whitehurst (Conley) and Jimmy Williams (East Wake).
Last month's East-West football and basketball games can be viewed on Time Warner Cable's On Demand channel 1234.
