UP ... JOHN LARSON, SOUTHLAKE CHRISTIAN: Larson's team lost two of its best five players on the first play of a 56-49 loss to Harrells Christian Friday, but the quarterback helped his team recover from a 21-0 deficit, completing 30 of 55 passes for 453 yards and four TDs.

Today's big game

Weddington at Providence volleyball, today, 5:30 p.m.: Traditional powers and Southwestern 4A conference opponents meet in early showdown. Weddington lost to Providence in a regional playoff semifinal last season. On Thursday, Myers Park – which beat Providence in last year's western regional championship – visits Weddington.

COMING UP: No. 2 Charlotte Catholic soccer vs. No. 15 Weddington Friday, 5:30 p.m.: Two state title contenders will meet in a tournament at Watauga High featuring several regional powers.

Reggie Price, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, has transferred to Lake Norman, a Lake Norman school official confirmed. Price averaged more than 20 points per game in his freshman and sophomore seasons at Garinger High.


Former J.C. Smith guard Erasto Hatchett is the new interim boys basketball coach at Concord Cannon. He replaces Ron Johnson, who left to take an assistant's job at Georgia. Hatchett has been an assistant at Cannon and with the J.C. Smith women for four years each. Hatchett inherits a three-time MAC conference champ with one of the nation's top players in junior forward Jarell Eddie, who has committed to Virginia Tech.


Ardrey Kell's Jack Klecker (2nd), Noah Brown (9th) and Charlie Klecker (10th) had top 10 finishes in the Providence cross-country invitational Saturday at McAlpine Park. Providence's Alex Taylor was sixth.


In the girls race, Sun Valley's Dannielle Hobbs won, ahead of Ridge View's Sierra Henderson and Weddington's Haley Kapheim. Providence's Arden Mattachini was eighth, Rock Hill South Pointe's McKenzie Brannon was ninth and Providence's Kaitlyn Costa was 10th.
